i've never watched Formula D.
but...can the average joe compete in this? or is this like a Pro's ONLY you have to be sponsored by some major company type of thing?

its just like D1 but american style....
you need to qualify for it.....and sponsors help alot for you to get their....

in some reguards formula d is more understanding of the leap from grassroots to pro. they host pro-am (professional ameteur) events, where the up and coming stars of drifting compete for formula d qualifying rounds. www.proamdrift.com/ (unfortunately the site is under construction)
